Signet Library wedding videographer
A library, a wedding and a very good party. Books have never had such a busy day.
I’m Joe Carter, the solo filmmaker behind Edinburgh Wedding Videos. The Signet Library is one of my favourite Edinburgh venues to return to: a proper sense of occasion, right in the middle of the Old Town, with plenty happening beyond the impressive surroundings.
If you’re planning your wedding here, this is my take on filming the day — with real weddings to explore and a few things worth thinking about before you put the timings together.
Rachael & Callum’s wedding at the Signet Library, filmed by Joe Carter.
A wedding in the heart of Edinburgh
The Signet Library is in Parliament Square, beside St Giles’ Cathedral and just off the Royal Mile. The Lower Library can host your ceremony, while the Upper Library provides the setting for dinner and dancing. You can also marry elsewhere and come here for the reception.
What I like is the contrast: all that architecture, then a room full of your favourite people laughing at a speech or getting thoroughly carried away on the dance floor. The building gives the film its setting. You and your guests give it its personality.

My approach: let the day happen
You don’t need to become actors because you’ve booked a wedding film. I film candidly, without asking you to repeat your entrance or perform a romantic scene on command. If you’re camera shy, we already have something in common.
I’m interested in the nervous laugh before the ceremony, the reaction to a familiar voice, and your friends’ increasingly ambitious dancing. I work solo, so you’ll deal with me from our first chat through to filming your wedding. I’m also a BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, but there’s no film crew taking over your drinks reception.
A few filming tips for your plans
Allow breathing room. Leave a little space between the ceremony, photographs and dinner. It gives you time to actually speak to your guests, and gives me those lovely unhurried moments to film.
Make an Old Town wander optional. If you fancy stepping outside with your photographer, we can discuss a short walk and work around the weather, crowds and your timetable. There’s no obligation to disappear for a long shoot.
Think about sound as well as scenery. Vows and speeches can bring a film straight back to life. Share your ceremony and speech plans with me beforehand so I can plan the recording and camera positions with the team.
Questions about a Signet Library wedding film
Do you film ceremonies held elsewhere?
Yes. Let me know both locations and your timings when you enquire, so we can discuss the coverage and travel between them.
What if it rains?
We’ll work with the day we have. The library interiors are a huge part of what makes this venue distinctive, so going outside isn’t a requirement for your film.
Can we arrange everything from overseas?
Absolutely. We can have a video call to talk through your plans, the coverage you want and how I work. You’ll speak directly to me.
Where can we check venue arrangements?
For current ceremony options, guest numbers, access and booking details, speak to the venue team and visit the official Signet Library wedding website.
