Rowan and Rhys got married at Colstoun House in Haddington on a hot, sunny day, with their little girl making a strong bid for star of the film. They may have been the ones getting married, but there was definitely some competition for the camera.
A lovely couple, an amazing venue and plenty going on. I wasn’t exactly short of things to film.
Sunshine, a big tree and a wedding
The ceremony took place outside beside a big, beautiful tree. The Scottish weather had clearly read the brief for once: sunshine, warmth and no need for anyone to make a dash indoors.
Colstoun is a cracking setting for an outdoor wedding. But even with all that scenery, it was Rowan, Rhys and their little girl who kept drawing my attention. Lovely surroundings are great. People being themselves are even better.
A small person with big scene-stealing potential
I love having children around at weddings. You can organise the timings, line everyone up and have a very sensible plan for the day. Whether the smallest guests are interested in any of that is another matter entirely.
The moments with Rowan and Rhys’ daughter are some of my favourites. Those are the bits you’ll want to watch back in years to come — the little expressions and family moments that are easy to miss when you’re in the middle of it all.
And the grown-ups weren’t exactly behaving themselves either. There was confetti flying and, at one point, Rhys being lifted off his feet by the wedding party. Very considerate of everyone to keep providing material.
A wander round Colstoun — and a look from above
There’s plenty to point a camera at around Colstoun House, including that lovely stone garden arch. I also managed to get the drone up for some wider shots of the venue and its surroundings.
I like having that mix in a film: the big view of where it all happened, then straight back to the people, the expressions and whatever’s going on next. Nobody needs four minutes of me getting overexcited about a building. However nice the building is.
First time working with Iwona. Hopefully not the last.
It was my first time working alongside Iwona Yeloneq, and we had a blast. Always a bonus when you get on with the photographer — you spend a fair chunk of the day together, usually trying to stay out of each other’s shots.
Great company and a very enjoyable day behind the camera. I’d happily do that again.
Getting married at Colstoun House?
If Rowan and Rhys’ film has put Colstoun on your list, have a look at the venue’s own website for the current ceremony options and arrangements. The outdoor setting and the variety around the grounds give you plenty to work with.
I’m based in Musselburgh and film weddings across East Lothian, Edinburgh and Scotland. I work solo, keep things relaxed and let you get on with enjoying yourselves while I catch the good stuff. If that sounds like your sort of wedding film, give me a shout.
