Rowan & Rhys’ Colstoun House Wedding

I was back at Colstoun House in Haddington in August to film the wedding of Rowan and Rhys, and we were lucky enough to get one of those proper Scottish summer days.

This was only my second time filming a wedding at Colstoun House, but it was just as stunning as I remembered. It’s a brilliant East Lothian wedding venue for filming, with the house, grounds and surrounding countryside providing plenty of different backdrops throughout the day.

And, as is usually the case with weddings, it was the people who made the day.

A brilliant couple at a beautiful East Lothian wedding venue

Rowan and Rhys were such a friendly couple and made me feel very welcome from the moment I arrived. They were completely relaxed about the filming, which is always great for me because it means I can get on with doing what I do best — staying in the background and capturing the day as it happens.

Their little girl was also never far away, and she spent much of the day running around and generally making sure there was always something going on.

Those are exactly the sort of moments I love filming. The little bits between the big moments, the people chatting, laughing, kids running around and all the things that you probably don't notice at the time but become some of your favourite parts of the film afterwards.

My second Colstoun House wedding

Colstoun House is one of those venues that gives you loads to work with as a wedding filmmaker. The house itself is obviously a great setting, but I also love having the space around it to capture couples and their guests away from the main action.

As an East Lothian wedding videographer, I'm lucky to have some fantastic venues right on my doorstep, and Colstoun House is definitely one I'd be very happy to return to.

It's also close enough to Edinburgh to be a really practical option for couples looking for a wedding venue outside the city, while still having that feeling of getting away from everything.

Working with Iwona Yeloneq

This was also my first time working with photographer Iwona Yeloneq, and we had a blast.

It's always nice working with someone for the first time when you immediately click and can get on with doing your respective jobs without getting in each other's way.

Iwona was great to work alongside and hopefully this won't be the last time our paths cross at a wedding.

A relaxed approach to wedding videography

My approach to wedding videography is pretty simple. I don't want your wedding day to feel like a film shoot.

I work in a very documentary-style way, keeping things as natural as possible and trying to be unobtrusive throughout the day. Couples often tell me afterwards that they barely noticed I was there, which is pretty much exactly what I'm aiming for.

I'll obviously make sure I get the important stuff — the ceremony, speeches, first dance and all the other big moments — but I'm just as interested in everything happening around them.

That's what makes every wedding film different.
