Somiya & Joe’s Wedding at Carberry Tower

Carberry Tower is one of my favourite wedding venues, so I was very happy to be heading back there to film part of Somiya and Joe’s wedding.

I’m also slightly biased when it comes to Carberry Tower – I live just down the road in Musselburgh, so it’s practically on my doorstep. I’ve filmed there quite a few times over the years and it’s one of those venues that I never get tired of. The building, the grounds and the number of different places you can film all make it a great place to work.

This wedding was a little different for me, though, as I wasn’t filming the entire day.

How I ended up filming Somiya & Joe’s wedding

The reason I was there came through Yorkshire Dental Suite, who had run a competition where Somiya and Joe won a rather impressive prize – new smiles, along with free wedding videography.

That’s where I came in.

Yorkshire Dental Suite asked me to film part of the celebrations at Carberry Tower, giving Somiya and Joe a chance to have some of their wedding day captured on film as part of their prize.

I wasn’t there from morning preparations through to the evening party, so this wasn’t a traditional full-day wedding film. Instead, I concentrated on some of the important celebrations, including the turmeric paste ceremony, the Haldi and the South Asian ceremony.

Colour, smiles and plenty going on

The Haldi ceremony was particularly good fun to film. There was colour everywhere, plenty of laughter and a lot of interaction between the families and friends.

For me, these are the kinds of moments that make filming weddings so enjoyable. You can set up a camera, but you can’t really manufacture the atmosphere of a ceremony like this. The best thing to do is get myself into the right position, stay out of the way and let everything happen in front of me.

That’s pretty much how I approach all my wedding films. I’m not interested in turning the day into a series of staged shots. I’d much rather capture what’s actually happening – the reactions, the laughter, the little interactions and all the things that couples might not even notice at the time.

The South Asian ceremony brought another completely different atmosphere, with plenty of colour and some fantastic moments to capture. It was great to be able to film these parts of the day and give Somiya and Joe something they could look back on afterwards.

Back at Carberry Tower

As I mentioned, I’m a regular at Carberry Tower and it’s always nice to be back.

Being based in Musselburgh means it’s one of my local venues, and I know the grounds pretty well by now. There are loads of different options for filming, whether it’s inside the building, around the grounds or making use of some of the quieter corners away from the main celebrations.

It’s also one of those venues where the setting does a lot of the work for you. You can get great footage without having to drag a couple away from their guests for ages.

I really enjoyed being part of Somiya and Joe’s celebrations, even if I was only there for a part of the wedding day. It was a great mix of colour, culture, laughter and plenty of smiles – and a slightly unusual way for me to end up filming a wedding!
